Celebrating Memorial Day is a time honored tradition at Spring Grove

Schedule:
10:00am - 3:00pm: The Veterans Tribute will be available for viewing in the Norman Chapel.

9:00am - 5:00pm: Spring Grove and Oak Hill Cemeteries will be accepting worn and tattered American flags throughout Memorial Day weekend.  The flags will be collected through June 13th at which time they will be ceremoniously retired in our Annual Flag Decommissioning Ceremony on June 14th held in the Civil War Section of Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum

Register to win a gardening gift basket at our information tents at the Main Entrance, North Gate Entrance, at the Customer Service Center and at Oak Hill Cemetery in Tri-County.

11:00am: The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War will be conducting their Memorial Day ceremony again this year.  The Sister Anthony O’Connell Auxiliary #10 will be participating in the rose petal ceremony.  This group will be performing a historic custom dating back to 1868:

A part of the Grand Army of the Republic Ritual dated May 1868 reads that  "May  is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land."  With the help of the audience, flower petals will be scattered over the graves of union soldiers.

11:45am: Steve Ball Civil War Music - Steve Ball are musicians from Columbus Ohio specializing in the music of the American Civil War, and the music and life of Stephen Foster.  Steve has studied the American Civil War since his teens, and has devoted the past twenty years to studying the music of this era in American history. Steve has done programs for the Ohio Statehouse, the National Civil War Museum, the American Civil War Museum of Ohio, and countless historical societies, genealogical societies, libraries, museums, Civil War Round Tables and other historical venues such as re-enactments or living history programs.

12:30pm: A presentation by Mr. Lincoln will be held in the Civil War Section, Section 21.

1:15pm: Join a Spring Grove Docent for the walking tour, Patriots and Pioneers. The tour will depart from the Civil War Section, Section 21.

3:00pm: Moment of Remembrance / Playing of Taps. Hunter Kinney will play Taps at the flagpole in Section 21, the Civil War Section.
