Greater Alliance Carnation Festival
Honoring Alliance as the Carnation City, the Greater Alliance Carnation Festival is a week of parades, food and fun throughout the city.
An outdoor RibFest kicks off the annual festival. The three-day RibFest begins the second Thursday in August and is outside the Carnation Mall.
Note: The starting day was changed in 2005 and was so popular the Festival Committee decided to stay with the change for 2006.
The festival is officially inaugurated Sunday with a kick-off parade from Park and Main Street to Glamorgan Castle. That evening, the Carnation Queen is crowned and her court is selected.
Monday through Wednesday, there are numerous activities each day. Activities include sporting events for children, a teen dance, a bowling tournament for seniors, the Carnation Capers talent show and the Carnation Fashion Show. The Review, Alliance’s local newspaper, prints the schedules of Carnation Festival activities each day.
Carnation Days in the Park begin on Wednesday with a musical performance by the Alliance Symphony. This event takes place in Silver Park and runs Wednesday through Saturday and features food, craft displays and free live entertainment. A shuttle is available to take festival-goers from Alliance High School and other designated pick up sites to the park. Thursday, the Carnation Festival takes off with hot air balloons lifting off over the park.
Friday through Sunday, additional activities are scheduled. For children, the festival offers a golf scramble and a pet show. Saturday, the mayor hosts a breakfast at Mount Union College and Sunday, the Carnation Triathlon is held. Alliance’s triathlon is sanctioned by the Triathlon USA Federation and attracts more than 150 participants.
Saturday’s grand parade heads east on State Street and proceeds north on Union Avenue to Broadway Avenue. Later that evening, fireworks light up the sky over Silver Park.
